What to Expect After a Functional Capacity Evaluation

Getting injured at work is a reality for many individuals. Private and public employees file 4.9 million workers' compensation claims each year.1 A functional capacity evaluation FCE test) is essential to filing a workers' compensation claim.

It is typically necessary for injured workers, employers, and athletes to return to their pre-injury state as soon as possible. In the event of a workers' compensation claim, an FCE test will provide a baseline for evaluating a worker's ability to perform the job requirements. Depending on the purpose of the assessment, the components of the FCE will vary.

A doctor will review the results of the Functional Capacity Exam to determine your new physical abilities for rejoining the workforce. This test aims to determine what limitations may be imposed on the individual in the future.

A physical therapist will analyze your functional abilities after completing the FCE test and how you perform your job duties. The evaluation will consider the patient's lifting and carrying capabilities, range of motion, and job stamina. A pain assessment is conductedduring the FCE to document client-reported pain levels during various activities and evaluate pain management strategies. A workers' compensation doctor will approve the exam and any restrictions following the completion of your FCE. Your physical therapist at Ace Rehab will guide you regarding your restrictions and provide any necessary clarifications.
