What is Direct Access Physical Therapy?

Did you know that it is not necessary to get a prescription or referral before seeking the help of a trained physical therapist? Each year, half of Americans over the age of 18 will experience a musculoskeletal injury, for some that injury will last for more than three months. This equals out to more than a hundred million people who would benefit from the expertise of a physical therapist.1

Direct access to physical therapy means that the patient is no longer required to obtain a referral from another doctor to receive an evaluation and physical therapy treatment. Without visiting another practitioner or health care provider, this saves both time and money and gets you on the road to healing quickly while preventing future injury. Physical therapy is a value-packed and low-cost health service that many people would benefit from utilizing after an injury.

Physical therapists recognize "red flags" that may signal the need for more invasive medical intervention. Instances like a fracture or a muscular or ligament tear that would require the need for surgery would be an example. During your physical therapy evaluation, if this is determined,  a referral to a physician or healthcare provider is immediately made before beginning a physical therapy program.

If your musculoskeletal injury or movement dysfunction does not require surgery, a physical therapist can begin immediate treatment.  After 30 days of physical therapy, your progress is assessed to determine if further treatment is necessary. When physical therapy goals are achieved, the patient will be discharged from treatment, and it is not required to follow up with a doctor.
