What is a Functional Capacity Evaluation?

For workers that have experienced an injury or on the job accident, getting back to work safely and quickly is a priority.

Rehabilitation programs can help with physical recovery after an injury but also focus on preventing and reducing work-related injuries, as well as helping workers determine their ability to return to work safely.

An important assessment tool is the Functional Capacity Evaluation (FCE). FCE is a comprehensive battery of performance-based tests that can help determine the level of physical ability for work, daily living, or even leisure activities.

Most often, FCEs are administered as pre-employment screenings or after an injury to determine whether a worker can safely return to work. This evaluation can also help guide recommended restrictions or modifications within the work environment that may be needed after an injury.

A Functional Capacity Evaluation typically begins with a client interview, medical record review, and musculoskeletal screening. The FCE will vary based on the purpose of the assessment. It may assess physical strength, range of motion, stamina/endurance, flexibility and other job-specific functions. It can include activities such as:

  • Lifting / carrying
  • Pushing / pulling
  • Sitting / standing
  • Stooping / kneeling
  • Object handling and manipulation

Functional Capacity Evaluations are performed on a one-on-one basis and may take place over 2 consecutive days. FCEs play an important role in providing detailed and objective information about an individual’s physical abilities and their capacity for work. The results of the FCE can be used to help workers, employers, and physicians make a plan of action for optimum worker’s health and job performance.
