Tips to Avoid Slip and Fall in Wintry Weather

We are approaching winter weather and with the cold weather comes snow, ice and slippery conditions. Statistics show over 1 million Americans are injured annually in slip-in fallaccidents during the winter months. Most slips and falls result in minor injuries such as bruises, but more severe injuries like broken bones and concussions also occur. Remember, ice and snow mean "take it slow!"

You can significantly minimize your risk with these tips to avoid slips and falls.

  • Keep your hands free and out of your pockets. When we walk with our hands in our pockets or busy on our cell phones, we can't catch ourselves should we slip and fall. Walking without distraction during icy conditions is the safest way.
  • Give yourself extra time to get where you are going. By planning ahead and not feeling in a rush, you lower your chances of slipping and falling.
  • Wear the right shoes. High heels and ice do not mix. You may need to change shoes once you get to the office but wear boots with rough or textured soles to trek through the snow and ice.
  • When exiting a vehicle, step down, not out. Swing both legs out, and place both feet flat on the ground before getting up instead of one leg at a time.
  • For stability, take smaller and shorter steps when walking. In slippery conditions, shuffling feet in slow, small steps keep your feet on the ground and lowers thechances of a fall.

While you can't always prevent a fall, taking preventive measures helps. When walking in icy weather, focus on what you are doing and be aware of your surroundings and plan accordingly for the weather.
